The
Doors 21st Century on Late Late Show With Craig Kilborn
Thursday, January 30, 2003
The
Doors 21st Century were the musical guests on the Late Late Show
with Craig Kilborn. Audience members were not supposed to line
up before 3:00 p.m., so naturally I arrived by 2:00. It was a long
afternoon waiting in line, then being moved to another staging area
before we were finally admitted to the building. That process involved
a bag search and going through a metal detector. After another wait
in an interior 'holding area', we were finally led upstairs to Studio
58. We realized that the band would perform FIRST and then be out
of there, so the small studio stage could be used for other parts
of the show. That bummed us out; we were not interested in staying
once their performance was over, but audience members were NOT allowed
to leave until the entire show was done.
Sure enough, out came the band first: Ray in dark clothes, Ian wearing
sunglasses and a black jacket over black t-shirt, Robby in red shirt
over a Jim t-shirt with camouflage pants, Angelo all in black ...
and surprise! Robby's drummer, Ty Dennis, took the drum seat. They
performed a searing Break On Through. The band stage area
was small, there wasn't much room for Ian to move but he definitely
made the most of it. It should be mentioned that Ian was NOT using
a music stand, which has been widely discussed (and debated and
criticized) since they began playing shows. After a brief break,
the band played Love Me Two Times. Ian removed his sunglasses
for this one. The band waved goodbye to the audience and left, and
the band setup was removed.
Later that night on the broadcast, only Break
On Through was featured. The next day, a Doors associate told
me that Love Me Two Times will probably be used on the show
at some later time.
